Houston Ford dealerships are excited by the new 2024 Ford Mustang which was unveiled in a very proactive “teasing campaign” that built excitement before the code named S650, as it’s called, was introduced to the public in a YouTube live stream as part of the Detroit Auto Show.
Ford has sold more than 10 million “Pony” cars as its affectionately known, since it’s introduction in 1964. However 2021 saw the poorest sales in history for the iconic car with only 52,414 units (all trim levels and power plants), despite efforts such as the Ford CEO Jim Farley even Tweeting, #SaveTheManuals as enthusiasts pushed back on leaked discussions to eliminate standard transmissions and the current generation entered its 6th year. Houston Ford dealerships believe the new S650 Mustang will reverse that trend and for enthusiasts, yes it is believed the new Mustang will offer standard or manual as well as automatic transmission options.
Long positioned as direct competition to the Chevrolet Camaro, first introduced in 1966 and available at Houston Chevrolet dealerships and the Dodge Charger, also introduced in 1966 (and outselling the Mustang for the first time ever in 2021) which is available at Houston Dodge dealerships, the new Ford Mustang may not look dramatically different on the exterior but there will likely be significant enhancements and options particularly in the power train. It is expected the new Mustang may have the standard 320 horsepower, turbocharged 2.3 liter four cylinder with a 450 horsepower hybrid V-8 and possibly even the remarkable 760 horsepower 5.2 liter V8 option (currently only available in the GT500) being offered. With more stringent corporate average miles per gallon requirements taking affect in 2026, look for enhancement to the drive train to happen much quicker than typically seen in the 7-6 year model cycle used by auto manufacturers.
